Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a girl. Her aunt was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and instilled DuVernay to show her creativity through art. Even though DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family, she lived in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay began producing television news at the age of an elementary school student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the house and examining the trash of one of members of juries. Her tasks to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
