Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th of August 1972, in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt worked during the night shift as nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay immediately became enthralled after showing her an old 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learnt by doing the art of being a good vehicle to engage in political activism. DuVernay's mother also had an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate by means of art. While DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. Her father was awed by the historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town of Selma Alabama. The summers she spent in Selma, Alabama would inspire her later to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of a student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the look-out and search for the house for a specific member of the Jury. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from the college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. The company launched a number of lifestyle and promotion networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
